Why does a short fling hurt so bad?

Author

I felt like crying today just thinking about how I fumbled things with a guy I only knew for a month. He wasn't my first nor was he a particularly good man but he was the closest I've ever come to dating. I opened up shared intimate moments and tried to change my guarded nature for him—only for him to push my buttons ghost me and leave me pretending I was nonchalant about it all.
Ever since my heart feels bruised and I've completely shut down to any new advances. I'm stuck replaying that single month crushed by self-doubt and unanswered questions. All I want to know is whether that month left any mark on his life or if he was just acting the entire time. I just need help making sense of why a short toxic fling hurts this much.

feeling ridiculous because the relationship was so short, like i didn’t earn the right to hurt that much. but a month can still crack you open when you shared parts of yourself you usually keep guarded, and the ghosting leaves so many blanks your brain keeps trying to fill.

are you stuck needing to know that what felt real and vulnerable to you was real to him too?

A little different story but I pushed them away and they took my word for it. I miss them. I wish they knew that I cried all day yesterday and today too missing them, wondering if they’ll ever return. It’s so dysregulating. Why can’t they come back. I long for a message I did care but I was scared to be loved.
