this made my heart hurt for you. my ex did the exact same breadcrumb routine after leaving me for someone else, texting me "i miss you" just to drop off the face of the earth two days later, and that emotional ping-pong literally drove me crazy. it is so cruel when they keep dangling communication just to keep you on a leash while they move on.
honestly, blocking his number completely was the only thing that gave me my power back. every time he gets to text you whenever he feels a little lonely, it resets your healing timeline, but cutting that line off forces him to live with the choice he made.

From what you said he just needs you when he has no one else or nothing else to do. It's best you don't reach out at all and let him realise your value and if he doesn't reach out at least you are protecting your peace cause otherwise your all anxious waiting for his response I've been there and it sucks. I hope things get easier as time goes
