Why did my boyfriend love bomb me only to run away?

Author

My first boyfriend and I were together for 11 months but the entire relationship was an emotional roller coaster. Early on he moved extremely fast—telling me he loved me after a week bringing up kids and introducing me to his entire family.
Five months in he panicked and broke up with me due to a fear of commitment only to come back begging for another chance. Later he used a harmless 20-minute catch-up text I had with an old acquaintance as an excuse to say his trust was damaged and his idealized view of me was ruined.
In July right after planning a Croatia trip together he abruptly dumped me again because meeting my family made things feel "too serious." Over the next two months he kept breadcrumbing me—reaching out for validation talking about sex and sleeping with me once—before I finally cut all contact in late September.
I eventually learned he pulled the exact same move on his ex of two years after living together for just four months. I’m left wondering if the intense start was just love bombing and why he ran the second things became real. How does someone go from treating you like their soulmate to discarding you when commitment actually arrives?

You learned the hard way that guys will say anything to get sex. ALways look at actions and not words.

Telling you they love you after a week is absolutely crazy. He just lovebombed you.
Him saying all that in the first few months is a red flag
