Why i finally left my 'waiting station' relationship

Author

For 8 years, I lived in a state of emotional suspension. I gave my youth, my loyalty, and my heart to someone who claimed to be honest by telling me he never wanted a relationship, yet he stayed in my life, taking my intimacy and support whenever he felt lonely. I realized too late that honesty can be a trap a way for someone to avoid responsibility while still enjoying the benefits of your love.
I stood by him through everything. I offered to be his partner through his depression, his childhood trauma, and his career frustrations. I told him I would stay even if he were paralyzed or could never have children. My loyalty was a gold standard, but his response was always the same: I’m in survival mode, I just want to eat, work, and sleep, and I have nothing extra to give.
He used his struggles as a shield to stay stagnant. He told me I needed a real man and that we had nothing in common, yet he wouldn't let go, asking where is my friend? the moment I tried to breathe. I see now that he had a massive ego hidden behind his 'weakness.' He made himself the victim so that everything would always be about his needs, his comfort, and his rules. He convinced me that he was pushing me away because he felt unworthy, but the truth is simpler and more painful: He was protecting his own ego and comfort at the expense of my future. He told me he didn't want to think about his future, or mine.
Five days ago, I finally broke the chain. I realized that you cannot save someone who is using their wounds as an excuse to keep you small. I stopped being the anchor for a sinking ship. I am mourning 8 years of effort, but I am finally choosing my own peace over his chaos. I’m no longer a waiting station for a man who is unwilling to grow. I am reclaiming my worth.

when you think back now, was there ever a moment where he actually showed up for you the same way you did for him, or was it always you carrying it?

When I look back, I realize I was the one doing the heavy lifting. He had moments of being sweet supportive protected lover but when life got real or I needed a future, he retreated into "survival mode" I was carrying the weight of two people for 8 years

i was like cutting off that role i had in their life, the fixer, the constant support.

Exactly It's so exhausting being the "fixer" for someone who doesn't actually want to be fixed 🤦‍♀️Cutting off that role feels scary but it’s the only way u can finally use that energy to fix ur own life

@Rouja Yeah. Im currently experiencing the same thing. After years of being focused on her emotions and well being, im feeling that my energy is starting to flow back to me. Makes me realize how much of me was perpetually dedicated to 'rescueing' her. It was my main job..and weirdly I miss it. Feels empty now.

Thank u so much ❤️❤️ It’s Day 5 and honestly it’s a rollercoaster. I miss the memories and the cute days and the things that we had through but I’m finally choosing my peace of mind over the uncertainty. It hurts a lot but i'm holding my self

@Rouja as you should! we sometimes live in the memories we had together, that’s why we keep hanging on to them, but dont see what’s really going on. i’m glad you got past that and screw them all if they didnt know how to keep us in their life

@Solvane893 Exactly! Screw them if they didn't know how to value what we gave im tired of hanging on to memories that don't match his actions

i spent years loving someone who always said she “couldn’t give more” but somehow kept taking everything from me anyway.

I'm so sorry u went through that 😢 It's a different side of the same coin. Whether it's a man or a woman, it’s heartbreaking to realize u’ve poured ur life into someone who uses the "I can't give more" excuse as a shield while they continue to drain u. We both gave "gold standard" love to people who were only willing to take. It takes so much courage to finally stop being their source of energy and start saving some for ourselves.
