A guy I dated about a year ago reached out a few days ago and apologized for how things ended. He said he wishes he had handled everything differently. We talked for a bit and I told him I was open to seeing where things go but I wanted to take it slow this time.
Since then we've been texting every day usually just checking in during the morning and at night asking how each other's day went. I think I came on a little strong during the first couple of days so I pulled back. Now I match his energy and only reply when he messages me.
The problem is I'm already wondering where his head is at. He texted me this morning I replied and I haven't heard from him since. Part of me wants to send a follow-up because I don't want to waste my time if this isn't going anywhere. Another part of me knows I could just be overthinking.
He still keeps in touch with my family so that makes me think he might be serious about reconnecting. I just wish I had a clearer idea of what he's actually looking for instead of trying to read between the lines.

do you feel like he’s showing up consistent with his words right now, or are you mostly holding onto what it could turn into?
i stopped chasing clarity through texting patterns. i asked one direct question instead of guessing, something simple like what are you actually hoping for here. it felt scary but it stopped me from spiraling in circles.
. i’ve been in that exact loop, where someone comes back, says all the right things, and suddenly i’m reading silence like it’s a message i’m supposed to decode. i got stuck there for weeks once, overthinking every gap in their replies.
Don't assumed. Just take him as a friend. And if developes, it develops. If not, just live your own life without him
