This may sound silly because the relationship only lasted four months but I’m really struggling with the way it ended. It happened so suddenly and felt so cold that I keep replaying everything wondering what I did wrong.
We met on Facebook Dating in early March. I still remember walking into a beautiful park here in the South with a Starbucks in my hand surrounded by old oak trees covered in Spanish moss. I wasn’t expecting much. I had been single for a few years had recently been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and was finally starting to come out of a difficult period in my life. I decided to give dating one more chance thinking I’d probably meet someone have a nice conversation and never see them again.
Instead I met someone I genuinely connected with.
He was confident funny and easy to talk to. We sat there for hours just getting to know each other. Before I knew it we were making plans every weekend. We went to local shows took walks in nature and spent so much time together. He came to Easter with my family spent Memorial Day with us and celebrated the Fourth of July at my sister’s house. Every Saturday I would stay at his apartment bring breakfast ingredients and cook for us Sunday mornings.
I gave so much of myself to that relationship. I invested emotionally financially and with my whole heart. I often paid for dinner because I genuinely enjoyed doing things for him. My family welcomed him immediately. They made sure he had food to take home and treated him like he was already part of our lives.
Even in the smallest moments I was always trying to show him he mattered to me. On my birthday I had a free Publix cake coupon and when we went to pick it up I let him choose the flavor because I wanted him to feel included. It was a small thing but those little gestures meant something to me.
Then everything changed on the Fourth of July.
We spent the day at my sister’s house and he mentioned wanting to see fireworks. Everyone was posting online about how impossible beach parking was going to be so we decided not to deal with the crowds. We got back to his apartment around 8 p.m. and I suggested we take a short nap before going out to find a smaller fireworks show nearby.
We drove around for a while and eventually found a small community park where fireworks had just started. We watched for about ten minutes but I noticed he seemed unusually quiet during the drive there. By the time we got back to his apartment something felt completely different.
As soon as we walked inside he turned off the lights went straight to his bedroom and said “I’m going to bed.”
That was so unlike him.
I sat on the couch for a while wondering if he even wanted me there. Eventually I started gathering my things. He came out walked to the refrigerator and casually asked “Okay… you getting ready to go?”
I told him “You don’t seem to want me here.”
I asked what was wrong but instead of answering he said “If you’re going to leave then skedaddle.”
I told him I wasn’t leaving. I went to bed beside him and tried to hug him and comfort him because I thought maybe something had happened or he was upset.
He pushed me away.
He was so cold toward me that I didn’t recognize him.
I went back to the living room and after a while I heard his phone getting notifications. I walked back into the bedroom and asked “Why are you pretending to be asleep?”
He angrily replied “I’m not.”
At that point I felt so uncomfortable and unwanted that I quietly gathered my things and drove the 45 minutes back to my apartment without saying another word.
While I was driving home he texted me “Drive safe. I hope you find a better man. I am sorry.”
I had no idea where that came from.
The next day I texted him because I had left some clothes at his apartment. He said I could pick them up but that he would leave them outside his front door. When I got there I asked him one simple question:
“Do you want to stay together and work through whatever this is or do you want to move on?”
He didn’t answer.
I asked again.
His response was “I’m shrugging my shoulders.”
And that was it.
I have replayed everything over and over in my mind trying to understand what happened or what I could have done differently. I honestly don’t know.
I loved him. I tried to make him feel appreciated whenever I could. I supported him spent time with him invested in him and welcomed him into my life and my family. They were kind to him and I truly believed we were building something together.
Maybe that’s why this hurts so much.
It’s not only that the relationship ended. It’s that it ended without an explanation. One day we were making plans and sharing our lives and the next day I was standing outside his apartment picking up my belongings while the person I cared about couldn’t even tell me why.
I know four months isn’t a lifetime but it was long enough for me to imagine a future. Losing something that felt so meaningful so suddenly has been incredibly painful and I’m still trying to understand it.

i keep wondering about that fourth of july. did anything happen before he went quiet, or did it truly feel like someone flipped a switch with no warning at all
i had a relationship end almost exactly like this, one normal day and then someone i loved felt like a stranger overnight. i spent months blaming myself, then realized i was trying to solve a mystery only they could explain.
4 months is the general timeline of an avoidant attachment style. Give it a little research. same thing happened to me at 4 months. and then 8 months and then 12 months and then 2 more times. its a cycle.
I had the same thing happen about a week before your situation. 1 year invested with my person. I had to take a 5 day trip out of town to attend a memorial service and when I got back he told me he couldn’t do the relationship anymore. No real explanation other than stuff going on in his head. He was so cold and it was completely unexpected, and just like you, my whole future vanished in front of my eyes
you're so entitled to feel that way, dont belittle it with how long it was, 4 months of something you invested yourself into is still a long time, and for you to just all of a sudden not know what went wrong and its all gone, thats hard, my heart goes out to you, all I can say is try not to let your mind go on overtime thinking what went wrong, because youre more likely thinking things much worse than what they are, be gentle with yourself ❤️
