Why did my ex apologize? conflicted feelings about his letter

Author

My ex sent me an apology letter and I'm not sure what to make of it.
I'm torn between appreciating the apology and wondering if I should respond at all. I'd really like to hear some outside perspectives.
This is what he sent:
Hey
It's been a while since we last talked. I took some time to reflect on our relationship and I realize I made a lot of mistakes. It was my first relationship and I handled many things poorly. I did things that have absolutely no justification and I'm truly sorry for them.
Neither of us was perfect but you always gave it your best and I'm grateful for everything you did for me. I was selfish far too often and I'm sorry for that. I didn't know how to cope with the level of grief I was feeling and I acted in ways that clearly crossed boundaries. I understand now that my behavior was unacceptable and I'm sorry for my actions.
You made me happy for a good period of time and I'll always be thankful for that. I'm sorry if this message disrupted your day but I wanted to apologize to you personally. I promise to respect the boundaries we established after the breakup.
I hope you're doing well with your artwork and that the people around you appreciate your talent.
You don't need to reply if you feel you've already said everything you needed to.
I wish you all the best.

What would you want to say in your response? If you want to reopen the door to communication, then you can reply. But if that is not your intention, I would not reply - even if it’s to simply say thank you.

At this point you’d want to treat it as a new relationship

I have a question for the op, I’m in a similar situation and I want to send a letter down line, from your perspective and I know all people are different. How did you perceive this initially?

Seems like a pretty genuine and heartfelt message to me, do you think you guys could work things out? If so i would maybe send him a reply

I can't see any reason not to respond. I think it takes a lot to look at oneself and acknowledge ones mistakes. I would just thank them.
