my ex and i were together for about a year. we both wanted something serious and hoped it would eventually lead to marriage but we were moving through life at different speeds.
when things ended it was pretty mutual. i accepted it because there wasn’t much else i could do. I had lost a good job and was trying to rebuild myself while also making sure i didn’t become financially dependent on her.
we would still talk occasionally after the breakup. she would check in wish me well and i appreciated that while i was trying to get back on my feet. after around four months she asked if we could go no contact because she had started seeing someone else. it hurt but i respected her decision.
it’s been about a year since we blocked each other. i finally feel like i’m getting my life back together and have started thinking about dating again. since my mom and my ex always had a great relationship i asked if she had heard from her recently.
that’s when my mom told me my ex was engaged. she had also deleted her social media along the way.
i can’t pretend the news didn’t hurt. at the same time i’m genuinely happy for her. she deserves love happiness and a beautiful wedding day. she was one of the sweetest people i’ve ever been with.
i guess part of me was hoping there was still some unfinished chapter between us. hearing that she’s moved on made me realize that chapter is truly over.

i'm really glad you can be happy for her, that says a lot about the kind of love you had.
Its because you keep contact with her, you need to detach because whenever you talk to her there will always be a feeling of “she still cares, shes still here”. dont keep touching the wound it wont heal
had an ex i truly respected too, and hearing they got engaged closed a door i didn't realize i was still staring at. i cried for what could've been, then i wished them well anyway.
you think you're grieving her engagement, or the future you always pictured the two of you having together?
yeah that's hard. it makes that hope really end.
