Why can't i move on after three years of heartbreak?

Author

it's been almost three years since my breakup. i fell in love with a boy from my class. we barely spoke in school but after our final exams he transferred to another city. i messaged him just to say goodbye and we ended up chatting every day. after only nine days we admitted we liked each other and started a long-distance relationship.
We were together for about a year and a half. We never met after he moved never held hands never even spoke on calls because neither of us had privacy or our own phones. It was all through messages but I loved him deeply.
Everything changed when my parents found out. My family is very strict and because we were from different castes they strongly opposed it. When I told him he said we had no future and ended the relationship. I couldn't accept it. I begged him to stay and over the last three years I've reached out so many times even asking if we could just be friends but he has always said no.
Three years later I still haven't moved on. I think about him every single day. I don't feel attracted to anyone else and I still find myself hoping for a message from him even though I know we'll never be together. I don't even remember his face clearly anymore but hearing his name still makes my heart ache.
I keep asking myself the same question. How did I fall this deeply for someone I only knew through messages? Was it really love or am I holding on to something else? And why does it still hurt after all this time?

i finally stopped asking whether it was "real love" and started asking why i was still waiting for someone who had already given me their answer. that shift took a long time, but it helped me.

i had a relationship that was mostly messages too, and people acted like it couldn't be real. it was real to me, and losing that person hurt just as much.

the not remembering his face but still desperately wanting him is relatable. my best guess is that even if you weren’t consciously thinking about this, parts of you were imagining a future where he was always in your life. whether it be short term or long term, you were picturing potential. and now your nervous system can’t let that go. i’m struggling with the same thing at around 90 days of no contact. i think it will get better 💗
