Why is letting go so hard?

Author

Letting go is hard because, for an anxious attachment style, separation can feel like more than losing a person, it can feel like losing safety.

You may know, logically, that the relationship is over. But your nervous system may still be waiting for the reassurance, the message, the return. A part of you keeps whispering, “Maybe if I wait a little longer, they’ll come back. Maybe if I understand what happened, I can undo it. Maybe if I love them enough, I won’t have to lose them.”

And that is why letting go can feel so cruel.
You’re not only grieving the person.
You’re grieving the future you imagined with them.
The conversations that will never happen.
The version of yourself you were when you felt chosen.
The possibility that kept you holding on, even when reality was asking you to release.

Sometimes, anxious attachment makes you mistake uncertainty for hope. You keep checking your phone, rereading old messages, remembering the good moments, not because you’re weak, but because your heart is searching for evidence that the bond is still alive.
But healing begins when you understand:
You can miss someone and still let them go.
You can love someone and still choose yourself.
You can wish they had stayed without making their leaving a reflection of your worth.

Letting go doesn't mean your love suddenly disappears.
It means you stop asking the past to give you the safety it could never give you.
And slowly, painfully, beautifully, you learn that closure is not always something another person gives you.

Sometimes closure is the quiet moment when you finally say:
“I loved you. I wanted you. I would have stayed. But I cannot keep abandoning myself just to keep a place in your life.”

And then you loosen your grip not because you stopped caring, but because you finally realized that love should not require you to hold on until your hands bleed.

i’ve been there, especially with the phone checking and rereading old messages. i knew the relationship was over, but some part of me was still waiting for that one message that would make everything feel safe again.
