Staying strong: how to keep no contact after a breakup

Author

One of the hardest parts of a breakup is maintaining no contact.

From my experience, whenever I broke no contact, I often ended up making things worse with my ex. But when I stayed in no contact, I protected my dignity and found more peace, especially when the person I loved was no longer treating me well.

I’ve experienced the begging and pleading stage too. And you know what? Once I finally moved on, I almost always regretted those moments.

So, how do I maintain no contact?

For me, one of the most important things is learning to regulate my nervous system. As someone who tends to be anxious, I’m learning how to sit with my anxiety instead of immediately acting on it. I think this is necessary not only for healing, but also if I want to build a healthier relationship in the future.

When we keep texting an ex, there will always be another thought: “Oh, I haven’t told him this yet.” There will always be one more explanation, one more memory, one more thing we wish they understood.

No contact teaches me that I don’t have to act on every feeling.

Maybe one day, when I’m truly calm, I’ll still want to contact him. But if I ever do, I want that decision to come from clarity, not desperation, anxiety, or attachment. I can acknowledge that I made mistakes during the relationship without needing to chase someone to prove that I’ve changed.

For now, I’m learning to put that energy back into myself.

Reading books, going to the gym, journaling, and listening to podcasts have helped me a lot. The urge to reach out still comes sometimes, but I’m learning that I can miss someone without contacting them.

Sometimes, no contact isn’t about making someone miss you.

It’s about giving yourself enough silence to hear yourself again.

i'd type a whole message to my ex, stare at it for an hour, then send it and instantly wish i hadn't. learning that missing someone doesn't mean i have to reach for them was HUGE for me.
