Why loving deeply isn't a weakness

Author

Have you ever regretted giving so much love to someone?

I did.

In my early twenties, after having my heart broken, I decided that I would never love my next partner that deeply again. I thought giving less would protect me. I thought if I cared less, losing someone would hurt less.

But did it make me happier? No.

That relationship failed too, but for a different reason: I wasn't being myself.

After years of counseling and growing, I finally understood something about myself—I am someone who loves deeply. And that is not a weakness I need to fix. It is a beautiful part of who I am.

I have been through several heartbreaks. I wasn't a perfect partner. I made mistakes, reacted badly sometimes, and had things I needed to learn. But one thing I don't regret is loving sincerely. When I loved someone, I tried. I cared. I showed up. I gave what I genuinely had in my heart.

So I no longer want heartbreak to teach me to love less.

I want it to teach me to love more wisely.

To love deeply without abandoning myself.
To give without begging for the same love in return.
To care without losing my boundaries.
And to know when it is time to walk away.

Because the wrong person receiving my love does not make my love wrong.

And I've learned that not everyone has the capacity to RECEIVE the kind of love we are ready to give. Sometimes people are only able to meet us as deeply as they have learned to meet themselves.

That doesn't mean we should make our hearts smaller.

It simply means we need to become wiser about whose hands we place them in.

I would rather learn where to place my heart than spend my life teaching it not to feel.

what was the exact moment or thought that finally helped you stop blaming yourself for loving so hard?

blocking off your heart only punishes you, not the person who hurt you.

I have learnt exactly the same. The world needs big hearts like ours. I just need to learn to stop giving my whole heart to those who dont have the capacity to hold it

@DreamyWay697 that’s actually true :) the hardest way that I did was to walk away even though I loved him so so much. it’s still hurt until now, but I really should

this made me tear up a bit. i spent three years shutting down after a brutal split, thinking i was being smart by holding back, but it just made me feel hollow and fake. learning that your ability to love deeply is a gift, even when the wrong person completely dropped the ball, takes so much time and courage to realize.
