Why did he turn cold after cheating?

Author

After 2.5 years together and planning a wedding for next year I caught my partner using dating apps. When confronted he lied and said awful things to me. Although he begged for another chance he immediately turned cold and distant leaving me emotionally abandoned.
Two weeks ago I tried going no-contact but severe anxiety panic attacks and complete physical exhaustion hit me hard. With no close family or available friends to lean on the isolation drove me to break no-contact and text him. He responded coldly showing zero genuine care while claiming he still wants to work things out. I feel immense regret for reaching out and fear I've ruined my progress.
I can't afford therapy I feel physically sick from the grief and I am terrified I'll feel hopeless forever. How do I get past this pain stick to cutting him off and heal when I have to carry this entirely on my own?

that horrible mix of panic and loneliness that makes you reach for the one person who caused the hurt in the first place. i remember feeling ashamed after breaking no-contact, like i had erased all my progress, when really i was just hurting badly and needed someone.

Reading this made me incredibly sad, it felt like I was seeing myself a few months ago. First of all, lie down, sleep, watch a movie, eat your favorite food, cry. I’m not going to tell you this goes away quickly, because it doesn’t, but believe me, with time, little by little, you start feeling less.
I’m telling you this because I lived through it myself.

It will get better. Do not try to get back with this person, they are the source of your pain and they will cause more pain. Try to be kind to yourself, your emotions are perfectly understandable. Let yourself feel the emotions but don't let them create stories about yourself. Don't let their failures be a reflection of your worth. When you feel terrible, remind yourself it's temporary and it will slowly get better.

When the urge comes, remind yourself that contacting him might give you temporary relief but it won’t give you the care and reassurance you truly need. Take it one hour, one minute or even one breath at a time. Write down everything you wish you could tell him instead of sending it. I’m also going through this and I know it’s not easy. I feel like I’m emotionally dependent on him and that’s made it so hard. The more we keep going back and texting them, the harder it becomes to heal. But I just woke up one day and told myself, “Nah, I’m done with this. I can’t keep hurting and embarrassing myself like this especially for someone who seems not to care.” With God, we will pull through. ❤️‍🩹 I wish there was a separate group where we could pray for each other. God said in Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” You haven’t ruined your healing. One setback doesn’t erase your progress. You’re still healing. 🫂❤️‍🩹 I have been there. I broke up with mine in April and I really had a hard time. I kept going back and I even broke my three weeks progress of no contact. But here I am, still fighting through it and taking it one day at a time. ❤️‍🩹🫂 Because mmm, the back and forth is exhausting. Sending you lots of strength. 💪❤️‍🩹
