My ex and I broke up after he told me he had cheated. I believed him, walked away, and we didn't speak for weeks.
Recently, we started talking again, and during a long phone call, he told me something I wasn't expecting: he claimed he had never cheated on me and had only said it to push me away.
He explained that his life was messy, he felt overwhelmed, and he was worried about being in a relationship while dealing with his own issues. He also mentioned that he had stopped drinking for me and wasn't sure how things would work if he started drinking again or whether it would cause problems between us.
He argued that if he had actually cheated, he wouldn't have admitted to it the way he did. According to him, he said it because he wanted me to leave, not because it was true.
Now I'm confused. Why would someone make such a hurtful confession just to push their partner away? And should I believe him now when his story is completely different from what he told me during the breakup?
The plot twist? 😂 After weeks of silence and everything that happened, we ended up talking and laughing for hours like old times. No relationship talk, no drama, just catching up.

he actually apologize for putting you through weeks of hell over a lie, or did he just brush past it like it was no big deal
realizing that a guy who lies about destroying your heart just to avoid a hard conversation is not someone you want back in your corner. if he is willing to fabricate a lie that devastating once, he will pull the same escape hatch the next time life gets heavy.
That's what I'm struggling with too.Because even if he really did say it just to push me away, why choose something that would hurt me that much instead of just being honest about what he was going through?
this gave me total whiplash to read because my ex pulled that exact same stunt by inventing a fake betrayal just to torch our relationship when he got overwhelmed. that kind of emotional manipulation is so cruel, and using cheating as a wrecking ball because he was too cowardly to just communicate his mess is a massive red flag.
Omg, someone who actually experienced the same thing. It's crazy to me that someone could make up a betrayal just to end a relationship. Can I ask, did your ex ever explain why he chose to do that, and did you believe him?
That’s quite an emotional roller coaster
He would have just come clean rather than saying that to push you away. it’s certain he needed some time and space to figure him self out as an individual but pushing you away with such saying was really not necessary
I agree that he could have just communicated what he was going through instead of leaving me questioning everything. That's the part I still struggle to understand.
