Why did he end things so suddenly?

Author

Yesterday my boyfriend ended our relationship after just over six months together and I'm struggling to make sense of it.
Our relationship started like something out of a movie. He approached me first pursued me introduced me to his family within weeks and asked me to be his girlfriend less than three weeks after we met. He told me he loved me after about a month then said he was in love with me soon after. I felt exactly the same. He was affectionate reassuring planned dates and always made me feel wanted.
Things became much harder when his dad was diagnosed with cancer. I did everything I could to support him and even during that difficult time he still made me feel loved. I also opened up about my past and explained that I sometimes need reassurance because of previous experiences. He thanked me for trusting him and told me we could always talk about it.
A few weeks ago I started noticing a change. He became less affectionate stopped complimenting me lost interest in intimacy and seemed emotionally distant. Around the same time his dad's cancer returned and his grandfather's dementia worsened so I assumed he was overwhelmed. When I asked if everything was okay between us he said he had been unhappy but insisted it wasn't because of me.
The distance only grew. He still spent weekends with his friends but never made much effort to get to know mine or take an interest in my hobbies. Even so he kept talking about our future together. Just days before the breakup he told me I'd obviously be part of his future bought toiletries to keep at my house and made plans with me for the next day.
Then as we were getting ready to leave my house he sat me down and ended things. He said he loved me but wasn't in love with me anymore and couldn't picture me in his future. He couldn't explain why. He told me he had been feeling this way for weeks but didn't say anything because he didn't want to upset me. When I asked if there was any chance of fixing things he said no.
I'm devastated. We rarely argued and I never saw this coming. I keep replaying everything wondering if I was too available too needy or if I missed the signs. I don't know how someone can tell you you're part of their future one day and end the relationship the next. I want answers I'll probably never get and right now I miss him more than I know how to handle.

the part that stayed with me is that he knew he was pulling away but never gave you the chance to face it together.

his family situation got worse, did you ever feel like he was pulling back emotionally, or did it all happen around the same time?

my ex also kept making future plans right until the end, so when he left it made me question EVERYTHING. that whiplash was almost worse than the breakup itself.

mine did the same thing … it’s so hard and confusing but the comment is right, it’s more about their capacity and ability to be emotionally vulnerable/intimate with you. these silly boys!!!

in my experience, guys who burn brightly quickly, tend to burn out just as fast. im sorry you are feeling this much hurt. Nothing you did contributed to it ending, its his lack of capacity
