Why being cheated on still hurts years later

I remember feeling exactly like this when my first ex in my early twenties cheated on me and moved on with another girl right after we broke up. It took me ages to get over that. And now I’m 34, sitting with that same feeling all over again. Being discarded really messes with your sense of self, no matter how much inner work you’ve done or how much you know intellectually that your worth isn’t tied to someone else’s choice.

thinking you’d be past this by now. do you feel like this breakup is bringing back the pain from that first ex too, or does this one hurt in its own completely different way?

I think the pain is doubled this time around because it’s bringing up old wounds too. So I’m grieving what’s happening now while also feeling some of that old hurt all over again.

i was cheated on in my twenties too, and when something similar happened years later i was shocked by how quickly that old wound came rushing back.

You can heal and move forward, but when something touches that same wound again, the old pain can come rushing back with a force that makes you realize it never fully left.

I know that feeling all too well. Most of my previous relationships ended that way. Now at my ripe age of 42, I've finally done enough work to realise its not a reflection of my worth, just a reflection on how shitty and cowardly people can be
